Issue Position: Public Education

Issue Position

Date: Dec. 15, 2014

The No. 1 issue facing our community is education.
Given the opportunity, every student can succeed, regardless of where they live or how much money their family earns. That is the promise of our public schools. We must make good on that promise.
Attended San Antonio Public Schools:
Arnold and Olmos Elementary Schools
Tafolla Middle School
Thomas Jefferson High School
My Record:
Represented students, parents and districts in lawsuits that demanded fair funding for public schools.
Fought for equal opportunities for all Texas students
Worked to expand Pre-K for thousands of San Antonio children
Collaborated with school district and community to keep a neighborhood school, Austin Academy, open.
Fought to keep the Texas Top Ten Percent plan at all Texas universities.
My Plan:
Restore and expand funding for our public schools to make them the best in the U.S.
Equal opportunities--in funding and curriculum--for all students, including economically disadvantaged, Special Education, Special Need and English Language Learner students.
Expand state Pre-K programs to full-day offerings
End regulations that force teachers to "teach to the test"
Pay public school teachers what they deserve
Fund and support our public universities so they can prepare our students to compete with the world
Control the cost of tuition for Texas public universities.
